What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100?
The OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate is a global, independent, unified system testing and certification of materials, semi-finished products and textile products at all levels of their production.
What is the purpose of product certification?
- Providing consumers with reliable and independent product information . Materials awarded this quality mark are free from harmful substances at concentrations that negatively impact human health.
- Hazardous products must be additionally marked in accordance with the law, which are tested in accordance with the criteria of STANDARD 100.
What harmful substances are OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified textiles tested for?
Testing includes the presence of banned azo dyes, carcinogenic and allergy-causing softeners, pesticides used in the cultivation of natural fibers from which textiles are made, and many other harmful chemicals that are not yet regulated. OEKO-TEX® tests are designed to detect the most harmful substances used in textile production:
- azo dyes (diazo compounds and phenol),
- formaldehyde (preservative, toxic to the liver, skin and respiratory, immune, reproductive and nervous systems), pentachlorophenol (toxic, classified as a second category carcinogen),
- polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – over 200 compounds with carcinogenic properties, with the most dangerous being benzoapyrene,
- organic tin compounds , used as fungicides, have a strong toxic effect on the central nervous system,
- phthalates (plasticizers), commonly used in the production of PVC products, increase the risk of asthma and allergies,
- perfluorooctane sulfonic acids (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acids (PFOA), the US Environmental Protection Agency EPA classifies these compounds as "probably carcinogenic",
- surfactants (APEO), fragrances containing aromatic nitro compounds, classified as carcinogenic and mutagenic,
- cadmium (extremely toxic, damages kidneys, causes anemia and bone diseases),
- nickel (strong allergen),
- lead (highly toxic, affects almost every organ of the human body).
Who conducts the tests?
Laboratory tests are carried out exclusively by 16 members of the OEKO-TEX® Association.
For what harmfulness are OEKO-TEX® tests performed?
The OEKO-TEX® test methodology is based mainly on the release of harmful substances from the tested materials.
